We’re all human and want to succeed in everything we do, but that’s not always possible and being worried about failing is a natural instinct. But there’s a big difference between being afraid of failing and letting the fear of failure prevent you from even trying to reach your goals and ambitions. This is something I really struggle with and am trying extremely hard to overcome.
Having a fear of failure is also known as atychiphobia and can be described as a feeling of shame. Someone who has a fear of failure doesn’t feel guilt or regret for their failed actions but turns that failure inwards and feels bad about themselves as a person. Instead of understanding a certain technique didn’t quite work, instead they start thinking they’re not good enough.
Signs you fear failure
- A reluctance to try something new or a challenging task.
- Self-sabotage such as procrastination, excessive anxiety or not completing tasks.
- Low self-esteem – Telling yourself you’re not good enough to succeed.
- Perfectionism – being only willing to try things you know you’ll complete perfectly and successfully.
So how do you overcome it?
The first thing you need to do is accept and acknowledge the fact you have a fear of failure and that you’re sabotaging yourself from chasing your dreams. Bringing these feelings to the surface and talking about them with someone you trust will help by giving you the confidence you need.
Next, work on your goals one step at a time. By breaking them down and focusing on aspects you can complete one step at a time will stop you from feeling like you’re climbing a mountain.
Looking at all the potential outcomes and looking at the worst possible outcome can also help prevent fear of failing. If you sit down and work out the worst possible outcome, you can prepare yourself for how to overcome it and come up with a Plan B. It’s important to not see failure as the final outcome.
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” – Thomas A. Edison
