Organising any aspect of your life is a completely personal thing and differs wildly from person to person. Some people write everything down, some people set electronic reminders and some ‘Mary Poppins’ people seem to simply click their fingers and are insanely organised with very little work. Seriously, how do they do it!?! I’m a bit of an organisational freak. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not in the slightest bit organised. In fact, chaotic describes my life perfectly but I love organising and the feeling of being organised! So I’ve found a few little ways that help me to stay on top of things and I’m going to share them with you all today.
Write everything down
I’m a sucker for paper planners and notebooks. If I don’t physically write something down, you can guarantee it’ll be forgotten. I go through countless notebooks where random little snippets of information are jotted down surrounded by squiggles and doodles. If you’re not a notebook kind of person, a whiteboard in your office will do the trick perfectly. Little House on the Corner has an amazing post showing you how to make your own!
Setting personal deadlines is a must for me. If I don’t set a specific time or date I want to get something done by, I’ll procrastinate so much that it never actually gets done. Each task I have I plan in advance when I’m going to work on completing it and when I definitely need it done by.
Take lots of breaks
Sometimes, when I have a long list of things to do I can completely forget to actually take breaks throughout the day. But an average person can only focus for 90 minutes at a time, meaning working without a break will result in you being much less productive and actually get less done.
Have a home for everything
This is a point I really struggle with, and keeping my home organised is not easy for me! One thing that’s massively helped me is to have a home for all of my belongings. My TV controls have a place to live, my makeup has a place to live and my books have a place to live. By giving everything their own home, it’s easier to return them to a specific place, where you know there’s enough room and you know know they’ll look neat and tidy.
Email filing system
Since I’ve started blogging and the amount of emails I receive on a daily basis has dramatically increased, keeping my emails organised has been key to keeping my organised. I check my emails daily and delete all unnecessary emails immediately to prevent them from building up and distracting me from the important emails. The rest of the emails I organize into different folders. Laura Sue Shaw has a great post on how to file your emails.
Delegate when you can
I always think if you can get someone else to successfully do something for you, why do it yourself? This majorly stems from my chronic laziness but actually, it’s great at keeping you organised. By asking for help with the smaller task, you’re able to focus much more time and effort on the larger most important tasks.
Always be 15 minutes early
I’m always late. I don’t know how it happens, but I’m always late. This doesn’t make me a very organised person because I’m constantly rushing around trying to get everything done and be everywhere on time. To fix this, I make sure to schedule time to everything ready I need and set times in my planner for 15 minutes earlier than necessary.
