Meditation For Beginners

M E D I T A T I O NLife these days is stressful. More people than ever as suffering with stress and forms of stress, such as anxiety and depression. That’s why I think it’s so important for people to actually sit back, relax and really take 10-15 minutes out of their day to care for their mental wellbeing. The purpose of meditation is to calm our mind and train it to deal with stress, making us much happier and more productive in all aspects of your life.

So how do I begin?

Find a spot to meditate
You’re going to want to find a quiet spot in your house that you can use to meditate daily. Where ever it is, it needs to be free of distraction and somewhere you won’t be disturbed. Once you find your space, make it as relaxing to you as possible. Clear it of clutter and add candles or lights to help you relax.

Experiment 
When people think of meditation they think of a cross-legged man sitting under a tree. But actually, meditation can be done in a number of ways. Experiment with sitting, lying down, keeping your eyes open or closing your eyes. This comes down to personal preference and no one way is better than the other. The important thing is your comfortable and can fully relax.

Try guided meditation
If you’re starting off it may be worth trying guided meditation. There are countless CD’s and books offering guided meditation that you can choose based on your preference. Audible.com is a great place to look for audio books and they have a great range of guided meditation to download. However, if you are looking for something cheaper, YouTube also has lots of great playlists you can browse.

Start with breathing
Now you’re actually in a comfortable position, it’s time to start. Mediation takes a while to understand and do properly. So, as a beginner, the first thing to do is focus on your breathing. Take long deep breaths, focusing on the air entering your lungs and how your body then pushes it back out. Try to clear your mind of everything else. Just focus on your breathing. If you feel your mind starting to wander, bring your attention back to breathing and push all other thoughts out of your head.

Commit for the long haul
Meditation isn’t something you’ll get good at any time soon, but that doesn’t mean you won’t start feeling the benefits immediately. Meditation is something to practice over a lifetime, every single day. Don’t worry! Before you know it, you’ll be obsessed and can’t imagine a single day without meditating.
